Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs. . . . Ephesians 5:19
Psalm singing is an opportunity to sing God’s Word. It can be easy and sweet. And God, when he gave the song of Moses (Deut. 32) said that when His people sang would sing His word, it would not be forgotten (Deut. 31:21). We all want God’s Word to make a lasting impression on our hearts and lives. So the blessing of singing the psalms is worthy of our best effort.
But at times there are some obstacles. Church leaders should pray and seek to find the best psalm settings available. Tunes may be interchanged to best suit the lyrics and those singing them.
Music ministers should give plentiful thought to the best way to introduce the songs, choosing familiar melodies and carefully teaching new ones.
Songleaders can also explain portions that are unclear, and give the scriptural background of the setting. May we do all we can to promote the blessing of singing the songs that God wrote!
